The process of honing travertine is generally divided between cleaning, grinding, and filling. Cleaning prepares the travertine for honing whilst grinding flattens the surface of the tiles and filling seals the holes present.
Cleaning
The cleaning process utilises a solution of soap and water to eliminate any dirt or grime from the travertine tiles. This means scrubbing the surface of all the tiles, getting into the grout lines and removing dirt from the travertine’s pores.
Grinding
Grinding is done to provide uniformity to the surface of the travertine. The process typically involves using specialised pads that contain diamond abrasives. They start with coarse grits and move on to finer ones as the process continues. The end result is flat travertine tiles without visual imperfections.
Filling
Filling is an optional part of the travertine honing process. Travertine tiles come in both the filled and unfilled varieties. Whether you opt for filling is largely a matter of preference.
